Creating Space: Critical Reflections on Challenges and Opportunities for Popular Music Education
Creating Space: Critical Reflections on Challenges and Opportunities for Popular Music Education
Popular music has the power to heal and offer spaces to connect communities. However, popular music education has not always been responsive to issues of social justice, access, and economic inequities. In light of these challenges and opportunities, the APME conference will offer and create spaces for dialogue and critical reflection through presentations, discussions, and performances that give participants actionable ideas and inspiration to take back to their communities to enact change in their own spaces.
We are excited to announce the following keynote presenters, with more to be announced soon:
Dez Dickerson The longtime guitarist with Prince’s legendary backing band the Revolution, he later enjoyed solo success within the Christian rock community.
Lucy Green Scholar and author of How Popular Musicians Learn: A Way Ahead for Music Education
Carlos Rivera Emmy award-winning composer of The Queen’s Gambit and Godless
Cassandra O’Neal keyboard player with Prince and The New Power Generation
Alan Parsons The Alan Parsons Project. Recording studio engineer for the Beatles’ Abbey Road (1969) and Let It Be (1970), and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
Darryl Jones Bassist for The Rolling Stones and founder of Jones Musical Instruments.
Isaiah Sharkey Guitarist for John Mayer, Ronald Isley, D’Angelo, Patti LaBelle, Christopher Martin, Paul Simon, and many others. His
sophomore album is Love is the Key: The Cancerian Theme.
Registration is now closed.
